VUR Update

Yesterday we met with the Pediatric Urologist in Minneapolis to discuss Olivia's Vesicoureteral Reflux and what her treatment plan would be. As some of you know she was put on daily antibiotics to try and prevent and recurring UTIs, but this past weekend she had a breakthrough infection with a fever of over 103. Because of that we were even more anxious to meet with the doctor.

After reviewing all of Olivia's records and tests he determined that she is clearly a grade 4 reflux (we were previously told she was grade 3), meaning the urine is completely going back into the kidneys and some swelling of the ureters is occuring.

We were also told that because she is grade 4 she is only 40% likely to outgrow this on her own and will most likely have to have surgery. The doctor put her on a new daily antibiotic, but said if another infection occurs he will do surgery regardless of her age. Ideally he would like her to be at least 1 year old because that increases the success rate of surgery from about 75% to 98%. If the antibiotics work and she stays healthy, he would like to re-evaluate her progress sometime in July or August.

On a funnier note - we have noticed that Olivia prefers to chew on and play with some very random toys - preferable furniture. They mentioned at daycare that she usually likes to suck on the table legs and chairs rather than playing with the rattles, etc... This past week her new favorite thing at our house is climbing under the end table in our living room.
