We finally scheduled Olivia's surgery for Friday July 16th. We've been a anxious for this day for a few months since we've known she would most likely need the surgery.
She will need to have a pre-op appointment Monday July 12th with her Pediatrician here in Duluth, and they will do some tests to make sure she has no infections prior to the surgery. Then Friday morning she will have an ultrasound before checking in. They expect the surgery to last 2-4 hours (this makes me a bit nervous) and then she'll be in the hospital for 1-2 nights. In the hospital and the days to follow they mentioned that she will most likely have bladder spasms and other discomfort for about 5-7 days. Full recovery could take up to about 2 weeks, but they said young children are very resilient.
As I mentioned before she has Grade IV reflux on both sides. Here is an image showing normal bladder/kidneys vs. the different grades of reflux.
During the surgery they will make a small incision in her lower abdomen. They will then reposition or re-implant her ureters into the bladder wall in such a way that reflux can not occur. Her doctor has told us this is a highly successful surgery and most likely she'll be completely fine moving forward.

Thanks for explaining this all and the diagram. We will be praying for Olivia along with the rest of the family.
I know surgery on such a little one is scary, I can't even imagine, but I know all will go well. I will send some extra hugs and prayers your way. Stay strong Ry and Steve, this will hopefully be the end to a long road of doctors and hospital visits!
